President Ersin Tatar spoke to BRT ahead of his informal trilateral dinner with Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Christodoulides, hosted by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in New York. President Tatar anticipates that the dinner will last approximately two hours, after which he will make a statement to the press.
Tatar emphasized his commitment to dialogue and stated that he would reiterate his stance on entering official negotiations only if sovereign equality and equal international status for Turkish Cypriots are acknowledged. He also highlighted that he would address issues such as the embargoes imposed on Turkish Cypriots, focusing on direct flights, trade, and contact. Additionally, Tatar plans to raise concerns over the Greek side's actions in sectors like construction, tourism, and higher education, which he believes have increased tensions between the communities.
During the dinner, Tatar will also express his willingness to cooperate on various issues, including energy, water, irregular migration, cultural heritage, and the economy.
Tatar plans to return to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on Wednesday evening, ahead of the parliament speaker election on Thursday.
