Before departing for New York, President Ersin Tatar reiterated his commitment to a two-state solution for Cyprus, stressing that the sovereignty of the Turkish Cypriots cannot be compromised. Speaking at Ercan Airport, Tatar underscored the importance of defending the rights of the Turkish Cypriot people and emphasized the pursuit of equality and continued existence in Cyprus.
Tatar's visit to New York is centered around attending an informal dinner, following an invitation by the UN Secretary-General during the 79th General Assembly. While noting that the dinner has no formal agenda, Tatar emphasized the importance of carefully managing the process and defending the new policy, which has been supported by Turkey for the past four years.
“We Will Defend Our Just Cause”
President Tatar highlighted the challenges in finding common ground, referencing statements made by UN representatives that sovereignty rights must be recognized for progress to be made. Tatar pointed out that the Turkish Cypriots' sovereign rights were established in the 1960 Agreements but have been undermined by the Greek Cypriot side, particularly with their EU accession and ongoing actions that harm the economy, tourism, and education in the TRNC.
No Compromise on Sovereignty
Reaffirming his stance, Tatar stated, “We cannot compromise on the sovereignty of the Turkish Cypriots,” emphasizing the need for direct flights, trade, and contact. He criticized decades of failed negotiations for a federal solution and echoed Turkish President Erdoğan’s assertion that the possibility of federation is no longer on the table.
A Two-State Solution as the Goal
Tatar declared that a two-state solution remains the ultimate goal, warning of potential dangers if sovereignty is compromised. He expressed his determination to advocate for the Turkish Cypriot people during his trip to New York, with full support from Turkey, stating, “I will try to defend the rights and national cause of the Turkish Cypriot people with responsibility, experience, and knowledge.”
