UBP Deputy Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu and CTP Deputy Fikri Toros Evaluate IPU Meeting in Geneva

  • 2024-10-14

UBP Famagusta Deputy Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu and CTP Kyrenia Deputy Fikri Toros, who represented the Assembly of the Republic at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, shared their evaluations of the event and its discussions.

Hasipoğlu noted that during the Cyprus facilitators group meeting, Swiss Parliament Member Laurent Wehrli proposed that the parliaments and MPs of the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities come together to draft joint laws addressing common issues like climate change and disaster management. However, the Greek Cypriot delegation rejected this suggestion. Hasipoğlu highlighted that, although the Greek side claims to seek a solution, their reluctance to take confidence-building steps impedes progress. He emphasized that cooperation and trust-building are essential for any future negotiation process, expressing disappointment with the Greek Cypriot delegation’s stance.

In his remarks, CTP Deputy Fikri Toros reflected on the geopolitical discussions surrounding Cyprus and the deadlock in the Cyprus peace talks. He mentioned the recent initiative by the UN Secretary-General to address this ongoing impasse and stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy during the seven-and-a-half-year-long absence of official negotiations. Toros reiterated the importance of the meeting and reaffirmed his commitment to representing the Turkish Cypriot people on the international stage.

Both deputies emphasized the need for cooperation and expressed hope for future progress, despite the obstacles posed by the Greek Cypriot side.
