Used Japanese Cars Dominate, BMW Leads in New Registrations: 2024 Vehicle Sales Report

    In the first eight months of 2024, a total of 17,037 vehicles were sold in dealerships and galleries across the country, according to data from the Vehicle Registration, Inspection, and Licensing Branch of the Traffic Department. Out of these, 15,160 were second-hand vehicles, while 1,877 were newly registered cars.

    Nissan Tops Used Car Sales Japanese vehicles dominated the used car market, with the Nissan Note being the most popular choice, selling 1,229 units. Other high-selling models included the Honda Fit (1,064 units), Suzuki Swift (707 units), Toyota Vitz (619 units), Mazda Demio (500 units), and Honda Vezel (500 units).

    Mercedes-Benz models also made a strong showing among used cars, with the Mercedes E-Series selling 421 units, followed by the Toyota Yaris (379 units), Mazda 2 (327 units), and Toyota C-HR (318 units). The Mercedes C-Series rounded out the top ten with 299 units sold.

    BMW Leads in New Registrations In contrast, luxury cars led the newly registered vehicle market, with German automaker BMW taking the top spot. The BMW X1 was the best-selling new vehicle, with 69 units sold between January and August 2024. Other popular models included the Mercedes GLA (51 units), Toyota Corolla (34 units), Mercedes GLC (29 units), and Ford Puma Stline Ecoboost M (24 units).

    The report also highlighted smaller sales of models such as the Fiat Egea, Mercedes A-Series, and BMW 4 Series, which sold 21, 20, and 18 units, respectively.

    This trend underscores a strong preference for second-hand Japanese cars in the used vehicle market, while brand-new luxury cars like BMW and Mercedes-Benz remain the top choices for new car buyers.
