The President of the Statistical Institute, İrfan Tansel Demir, has announced that the Institute has initiated a comprehensive "Population Projections" study. The study is being conducted with technical support from experts at the Turkish Statistical Institute and is aimed at updating the country’s population forecasts based on current trends and assumptions.
Demir highlighted that the Institute has been working closely with various institutions and organizations to analyze administrative records, helping to determine the changing population trends. As a result, the "Population Projections" will be revised to reflect these changes.
The study, which is nearing completion, will undergo a quality control evaluation before being shared with the public. Demir noted that recent migration patterns, particularly since 2021, have significantly altered the country's population structure and size, leading to projection figures that fall below the actual population numbers.
Calling the "Population Projections" one of the Institute's most critical projects, Demir emphasized its importance in forming future policies. He stated, "It has become essential for our institution to revise the Population Projections."
In his statement, Demir explained, "Population Projections are vital for producing informed policies by identifying current population trends and predicting future population structures if these trends continue. The last projections were made in 2014, based on the 2011 Population and Housing Census. These projections are calculated using birth and death data from registration systems, as well as trends in foreign student numbers, a key indicator of migration."
