The Rights Protection Initiative aims to highlight to the world once again that the property issue can be resolved through the Immovable Property Commission (IPC) with a demonstration in Metehan on Monday, October 14.
The demonstration, scheduled for October 14, will bring the Greek Cypriot Government’s efforts to destabilize the real estate sector to the attention of the international community. Previously, the Rights Protection Initiative held press conferences and various meetings in London, Brussels, and Strasbourg to raise global awareness on the issue. This time, they plan to hold a demonstration in front of the Metehan crossing point in Nicosia.
During the demonstration, which is planned for 11:00 AM on Monday, October 14, the Initiative will read out a statement addressed to officials of the United Nations and the European Union. Participants are expected to carry banners and placards reflecting the organizations' perspectives on the attacks initiated by the Greek Cypriot side, using the property issue as a tool.
The organization's representatives, who are preparing for the demonstration, emphasized their commitment to peace, stating, "Our goal is peace. We seek development through peaceful means. The growth of prosperity in Cyprus, by safeguarding the rights of property owners in both the North and South, benefits all Cypriots. Blocking this will only increase tensions between the two communities and hinder efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem." They stressed that the protest would convey peaceful political messages.
The representatives also highlighted the significance of choosing the Metehan crossing point as the location for the demonstration, stating, "With the opening of Metehan in 2003 and the subsequent increase in crossings between the two sides, many hostilities have been overcome, and new bridges have been built between the communities. We are determined to prevent these bridges from being destroyed and new tensions from arising. We want to express this determination to our friends on the Greek Cypriot side at this crossing point."
The Rights Protection Initiative previously brought international attention to the possibility of resolving the property issue through the IPC with a press conference held in London on September 5. Following the conference, Initiative representatives held meetings in Brussels and Strasbourg, contributing to the failure of the Greek Cypriot side’s attempts to nullify the IPC.
The representatives of the Initiative noted that the efforts from the Greek Cypriot side would continue, and they emphasized their commitment to opposing detentions and attacks by the Greek Cypriot side. They reiterated that the IPC remains the only viable solution under current conditions for addressing the property issue and protecting the rights of Greek Cypriots as former property owners.
