  • 2024-09-27

On the occasion of World Tourism Day, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu emphasized Northern Cyprus' efforts to strengthen its position as a key player in global tourism. In his message, Ataoğlu highlighted the country's unique cultural and natural heritage, and the ministry's ongoing projects to promote sustainable and quality tourism.

Ataoğlu's statement underscored the role of tourism in fostering cross-cultural understanding and friendship, while expressing determination to ensure that Northern Cyprus takes its rightful place in the tourism sector. He cited the country's rich history, having hosted many civilizations in the heart of the Mediterranean, as well as its natural beauty and cultural diversity, as key attractions for visitors.

Ongoing and Upcoming Projects The ministry has embarked on several major tourism projects, including:

    • The transformation of Kyrenia Ancient Port into a major tourist attraction with a modernized appearance.
    • The near completion of the Theatres Building and the upcoming opening of the Kyrenia Fine Arts Museum.
    • The development of a Tourism Master Plan to shape the future of Northern Cyprus’ tourism industry over the next 10 years.

In addition, Ataoğlu emphasized the importance of increasing tourist flow through Ercan Airport, particularly as a countermeasure to Southern Cyprus' attempts to undermine Northern Cyprus' tourism. Plans to provide incentives for flights from Europe starting in 2025 aim to bolster this effort.

Promotions and Branding Ataoğlu also touched on the ministry's Ada Kıbrıs brand, which focuses on promoting Northern Cyprus in the Turkish market. This initiative encourages Turkish citizens to explore Northern Cyprus as a holiday destination.

Ataoğlu closed by expressing his hope that World Tourism Day would further raise awareness of the importance of tourism for sustainable development, both economically and culturally. He reiterated his commitment to making Northern Cyprus a leading tourism brand and extended his best wishes to tourism workers and partners in the industry.
