On World Tourism Day, Deputy Prime Minister and Undersecretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment, Serhan Aktunç, shared the steps being taken to boost tourism in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Aktunç highlighted the upcoming initiatives designed to address key challenges in the tourism sector, especially high airline ticket prices and long-term planning.
Charter Flight Incentives from 2025 Starting January 1, 2025, the TRNC will introduce incentives for charter flights from Europe in an effort to reduce expensive plane ticket prices and increase the competitiveness of Ercan Airport. Aktunç explained that these incentives will reduce reliance on flights from the Greek side, strengthen Ercan’s position, and enhance arrivals through Turkey.
Tourism Master Plan for 2035 Aktunç announced the ongoing development of the Tourism Master Plan, which aims to provide a clear roadmap for the sector over the next decade, stretching through 2035. The plan, expected to be completed within the year, will guide the country's tourism strategy with a long-term vision.
Focus on Alternative Tourism and Societal Engagement Recognizing tourism’s critical role in the TRNC’s economy—accounting for 60% of the trade deficit—Aktunç emphasized the importance of increasing alternative tourism activities. He stressed that the government’s goal is to bring local society and tourists closer together, ensuring that small businesses benefit from tourism. Efforts are also being made to lower the cost of living and create a more competitive environment for both locals and visitors.
