President Ersin Tatar has called on the United Kingdom, as a guarantor state, to take a "more sensitive" approach to lifting the restrictions and embargoes placed on Turkish Cypriots. He emphasized that changing circumstances over time necessitate a review of the UK's policies.
Speaking after official meetings in London, Tatar highlighted his upcoming visit to New York on September 22, where he plans to meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He stated that the Turkish Cypriot side would not engage in negotiations on the Cyprus issue unless their demands for “direct flights, direct trade, and direct contact” are met. These demands aim to confirm the sovereign rights of the Turkish Cypriot people.
During a reception at the British Parliament, Tatar urged the lifting of the "unjust isolation and embargo" imposed on Turkish Cypriots. He also stressed that the UK, as a guarantor state, has a responsibility to be more attentive to the needs and rights of the Turkish Cypriots.
Tatar underscored that, with the support of Turkey, the TRNC remains committed to finding a solution to the Cyprus issue based on sovereign equality. He made clear that the TRNC would not accept any external impositions or restrictions, stressing that the Turkish Cypriots have demonstrated goodwill in seeking a solution.
Reflecting on Cyprus-EU Relations and Future Prospects
Tatar also reflected on the political history of Cyprus, noting that 20 years have passed since the Greek Cypriot Administration joined the European Union, a decision that occurred during the UK Labour Party's time in power. He referred to former British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw's statement that allowing Greek Cyprus to join the EU without resolving the island's division was one of his biggest regrets.
While he does not expect an immediate shift in the UK's Cyprus policy, Tatar emphasized that the conditions for Turkish Cypriots have evolved and that their exclusion is no longer justified.
Addressing Military Presence and International Relations
Tatar also commented on the military presence and activity of the UK and US on the island, particularly regarding their support to Israel from British bases. He warned that such activities could make Cyprus a target and are not in the island's best interest.
Tatar reiterated Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan's statement that Cyprus could potentially become a target, reflecting concerns over the broader geopolitical implications for the region.
