The Nicosia Greek High Criminal Court has ruled to extend the detention of Simon Aykut, a Turkish citizen of Jewish origin, who has been held in the Greek Central Prison since June. Aykut, detained due to construction activities he carried out in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), will remain in custody until September 27.
According to reports from Greek Cypriot news outlets, Aykut's defense team had requested his release on September 9, citing the poor conditions of his detention and his health concerns. However, the High Criminal Court ruled this morning that his detention should continue, citing a "risk of flight from the court."
Aykut’s next court date is set for September 27, when the Greek Cypriot prosecution is expected to respond to the defense’s argument that the Greek Cypriot High Criminal Court lacks jurisdiction to hear the case. The defense has cited international law and customs in their objection to the court’s authority over the matter.
