One Dead, 27 Injured in 70 Traffic Accidents Across the Country Last Week

    Last week, the country witnessed 70 traffic accidents, resulting in one fatality and 27 injuries. Speeding emerged as the leading cause of these accidents and related offenses, according to a statement from the Police Press Office.

    Between August 19-25, out of the 70 accidents recorded, one resulted in a fatality, 19 caused injuries, and 50 led to property damage. The single fatal accident claimed one life, while 27 people were injured in other incidents.

    The breakdown of accidents reveals that 19 were attributed to speeding, 17 to failure to stop at intersections, 15 to reckless driving, 11 to following too closely, and 8 to other factors. The total damage from these accidents amounted to 5,892,050 TL, with Lefkoşa reporting 21 accidents, Gazimağusa 20, Kyrenia 18, İskele 8, and Güzelyurt 3.

    During the same period, police conducted traffic inspections across the country, checking a total of 14,881 vehicle drivers. Of these, 2,736 drivers were found to have committed offenses, leading to legal action. In addition, 267 vehicles were banned from the roads, and 9 drivers were arrested.

    The most common offenses reported were:

    • Speeding: 851 cases
    • Using a Mobile Phone While Driving: 253 cases
    • Operating a Vehicle Without a Navigational License: 232 cases
    • Failing to Comply with Traffic Lights: 173 cases
    • Speeding Detected by Mobile Devices: 162 cases
    • Not Complying with Traffic Signs: 151 cases
    • Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol: 95 cases
    • Driving Without Wearing a Seat Belt: 95 cases
    • Driving Without an Inspection: 69 cases
    • Driving Without Insurance or Out of Coverage: 53 cases
    • Reckless Driving: 34 cases
    • Operating Without a Passenger Transport “T” Business Permit: 30 cases
    • Applying Visibility-Blocking Window Film: 19 cases
    • Non-Compliance with Light Regulations or Insufficient Lighting: 19 cases
    • Dangerous Driving: 16 cases
    • Driving Without a License: 15 cases
    • Operating Without a Personal Goods Transport “B” Business Permit: 9 cases
    • Driving a Motorcycle Without Wearing a Helmet: 6 cases
    • Other Traffic Offenses: 616 cases

    These figures underscore the ongoing issues with road safety and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
