The Ministry of Labor and Social Security and the Ministry of National Education, in collaboration with the Cyprus Turkish Tradesmen and Craftsmen Chamber (KTEZO), are launching the "500 Jobs in 5 Years" project to train and employ skilled intermediate staff in key sectors.
???? The program targets adults over the age of 18.
???? 100 people will be trained every six months under an on-the-job training model, with state support and funding from the Employment Support Center (IDM).
???? Training will be conducted in five key sectors, which currently include:
✅ Metalwork
✅ Furniture
✅ Tourism
✅ Air Conditioning
✅ Installation & Plumbing
???? Participants will work and train simultaneously, receiving both salaries and social insurance coverage while gaining hands-on experience.
???? KTEZO General Coordinator Hürrem Tulga emphasized that the shortage of qualified intermediate staff is a growing concern, as the system pushes young people towards university education instead of vocational training.
"This project is a crucial step, but it alone cannot fill the massive gap in skilled personnel. Currently, only 300-400 students attend vocational training, while thousands enroll in universities. We must restructure education to direct youth into needed professions."
Tulga stressed that over-saturation in fields like beauty services (barbers, hairdressers, nail salons) has led to unemployment, while other industries suffer from worker shortages.
The Ministry of Labor is set to introduce financial incentives for students attending apprenticeship schools, aiming to make vocational education a more attractive option.
"We need to provide incentives in sectors that require manpower. Young people see certain jobs as easy investments, which creates imbalances in the workforce. With structured support, we can guide them into professions where they are truly needed."
???? The project is in its final stage and will be launched within 1-2 weeks.
???? Applications will soon open, followed by placement in relevant businesses.
???? The program also aligns with vocational training laws, ensuring workers receive certifications and proper job documentation.
With 5,000 certified professionals across various trades, the new initiative aims to expand certification programs, ensuring that skilled professionals are officially recognized in the workforce.
This project is expected to boost employment, enhance workforce quality, and address labor shortages across key industries in TRNC.
