TRNC Expands Housing Policies: My First Home Loan and Social Housing Projects Progressing

  • 2025-02-18

The Minister of Interior, Dursun Oğuz, has provided key updates on the government’s housing policies, emphasizing efforts to help citizens become homeowners through the My First Home Loan and Social Housing projects. Speaking on KIBRIS TV’s "Kıbrısta Sabah" program, Oğuz addressed growing demand for these initiatives and highlighted steps taken to accelerate housing solutions.

Strong Demand for ‘My First Home Loan’

Minister Oğuz announced that the third phase of the My First Home Loan program officially started on February 13, following the success of the previous two phases, which benefited 517 citizens.

"Our citizens have a great interest in becoming homeowners. The demand is high, and according to information from the Land Registry Office, applications continue to rise. This project will also stimulate the real estate sector," Oğuz stated.

Due to this increasing interest, the Prime Minister has approved the launch of the third stage, reinforcing the government's commitment to expanding affordable homeownership opportunities.

Social Housing Projects to Begin in Güzelyurt and Alayköy

Addressing delays in the Social Housing Project, Oğuz clarified that procedural requirements, such as the establishment of a cooperative and regulatory adjustments to protect rural lands, were necessary before construction could begin.

"The necessary permits for social housing projects in Güzelyurt and Alayköy have been obtained, and technical studies are being finalized. The foundation will be laid as soon as possible," he stated.

The government aims to implement long-term, low-interest payment plans similar to the First Home Loan, ensuring affordability for citizens in need. Further details will be announced by the Prime Minister after cost calculations are completed.

New Regulations to Protect Rural Lands

Oğuz also outlined new measures to prevent rural land exploitation, ensuring land allocations serve those in genuine need rather than being used for profiteering.

"We observed that some individuals were transferring rural lands for profit, which harmed social justice. These transfers are now banned, and violators will face fines and imprisonment. Rural lands are reserved for those who truly need them," Oğuz emphasized.

    Earthquake Preparedness and Education Investments

Beyond housing, Oğuz addressed earthquake preparedness efforts, particularly in education infrastructure. He highlighted projects to reinforce and rebuild schools, including those funded by philanthropists, and the temporary use of container schools to ensure uninterrupted education.

"If our children cannot receive education in a safe school, we prefer them to study in a safe environment in container schools. Education is our future, and their safety is our top priority," he stated.
