Family of Simon Mistel Aykut Condemns Prison Conditions and Denies Allegations

  • 2025-02-06

The family of Simon Mistel Aykut, who is currently imprisoned in Southern Cyprus, has strongly criticized the authorities for allegedly concealing his deteriorating health condition. In a written statement, the family described the situation as a "scandal that will go down as a black mark in the history of democracy and law in Cyprus." They also claimed that medical reports confirm Aykut should not be kept in prison.

    Denial of Threat Allegations

The statement denied allegations that Aykut had threatened Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides via social media, calling the claims a "political game." The family accused the Republic of Cyprus authorities of manipulating the case to cover up their failure in addressing Aykut's medical condition.

The family also refuted reports that a mobile phone was found in Aykut’s cell, stating that initial claims of the device being found in his prison cell later changed to it being found in the prison corridor, and eventually, officials claimed that "no phone was found at all."

    Concerns Over Aykut's Health

The statement emphasized that Aykut has maintained his innocence since his arrest and that both he and those close to the case are convinced of his wrongful imprisonment.

More critically, the family revealed that despite repeated warnings and requests for medical tests, the court ignored concerns about Aykut’s health. An independent medical examination later confirmed that he has cancer, raising serious concerns over his continued imprisonment.

    Family Calls for Justice

The family urged authorities to take immediate action, stating:

"The allegation that our father Simon Aykut threatened the Greek leader Christodoulides is nothing more than a political game, just like the basis of the case against him. The fact that his health condition is being swept under the rug is a scandal that will go down as a black mark in the history of democracy and law in Cyprus."

They called on international human rights organizations and legal bodies to intervene and ensure justice for Aykut.
