Renovation Begins on Çayönü-Güvercinlik Road to Improve Safety and Accessibility

  • 2025-01-20

Renovation works have officially started on the Çayönü-Güvercinlik road, addressing long-standing complaints from local residents about its hazardous sharp bends and collapses caused by rainwater. The 17.5-kilometer road will undergo major improvements, including the elimination of dangerous curves, complete resurfacing of sections prone to water accumulation, and widening in certain areas to enhance travel safety and accessibility.

Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı visited the site today to inspect the ongoing work and received updates from the project team. Speaking at the site, Arıklı described the Çayönü-Güvercinlik road as a “gangrenous” issue that had been a source of frustration for locals for a long time. He emphasized that the renovation project was launched following serious demands from the mayor and local headmen, as well as protests held in recent days.

Arıklı assured the public that the road will be completed by April, stressing that the project includes road widening, complete excavation in some areas, and significant structural improvements. "After the completion of the Çayönü-Güvercinlik road, work vehicles will move to the Karpaz-Manastır road. We are a government that keeps its promises," Arıklı stated.

Highlighting broader infrastructure efforts, Arıklı noted that half of the 320-kilometer village road network, part of the Highways Master Plan Agreement with Turkey, has already been completed, with the remaining sections progressing rapidly under the supervision of two companies. "Many villages are requesting roadwork, but the process is being carried out in a planned and systematic manner," he added.

    Commitment to Infrastructure Development

Beyarmudu Municipality Mayor Bülent Bebek also commented on the project, recalling that the Ercan Airport-Güvercinlik road was initially planned under a 2021 protocol with the Ministry of Transport and the Department of Highways. However, the project had only reached the Türkmenköy circle, leaving the 17.5-kilometer section within Beyarmudu Municipality’s borders incomplete. "At least, under your leadership and that of the government, this long-overdue project is finally being realized, and promises are being fulfilled," Bebek stated.

The headmen of Çayönü and Güvercinlik also expressed their gratitude, referring to the deteriorated road conditions as "bleeding wounds" and thanking all those who contributed to the project.
