President Tatar Rejects Greek Cypriot NATO Membership Aspirations

  • 2024-12-01

President Ersin Tatar criticized Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides for suggesting NATO membership for the Greek Cypriot Administration, calling the idea impractical and politically motivated. Tatar highlighted Turkey’s key role in NATO and stated that such membership requires unanimous approval, which Turkey would oppose.

Tatar accused Christodoulides of creating distractions to regain political support and pursuing policies aimed at countering Turkey, a vital NATO member. He urged the Greek Cypriot leadership to acknowledge the realities on the island and focus on cooperation for mutual benefit.

Referring to Turkey’s intervention in 1974, Tatar praised the Turkish Armed Forces for maintaining peace and stability on the island. He warned that attempts by the Greek Cypriot side to join NATO could destabilize the region and undermine efforts for dialogue.

Tatar concluded by calling for realistic approaches and collaboration between the two communities to ensure regional stability and progress.
