The recent violent storm that swept through Famagusta caused significant damage to the already deteriorating pier at Famagusta Port, exposing years of neglect and indifference. The storm tore away floating pontoons, originally installed to replace a collapsed section of the pier, and further weakened the remaining structure, raising alarm among yacht owners.
The pier, originally constructed by the British, partially collapsed seven years ago due to lack of maintenance. Temporary floating pontoons were installed to replace the 30-meter section that had fallen. However, during the storm, the pontoons proved unable to withstand the severe weather, with their anchors ripped away and rotten bollards and planks failing under pressure.
Two pontoons used for mooring ships were detached entirely, leaving yachts worth millions of lira at risk and sparking frustration among yacht owners.
Bircan Akgürel, a yacht owner whose boat is his sole livelihood, spent the night at the port to secure his vessel during the storm. Akgürel described the port as vulnerable and in urgent need of restoration.
“I waited all night at the port,” said Akgürel. “The rotten pontoons tore away, leaving my boat disconnected from the pier. I had to tie my boat to the ropes of other boats in a very unsafe manner. This situation endangers both property and lives. We demand action from the authorities.”
Akgürel voiced frustrations over the lack of progress in addressing the pier's condition. Despite repeated promises from authorities to allocate funds for repairs, no action has been taken. He emphasized that the collapse of the remaining structure would result in disaster.
“The pier collapsed on April 22, 2017, and for seven years, nothing substantial has been done,” said Akgürel. “There are 60 boats moored here, and as boat owners, we fulfill all our responsibilities. Indifference will lead to the complete collapse of the remaining structure.”
In addition to the structural issues, Akgürel pointed out the lack of basic amenities at the port, including water access and affordable electricity. He stressed that the situation not only impacts boat owners but also affects tourism, as visitors experience firsthand the neglected state of the port.
“We are ashamed to host tourists in such conditions,” Akgürel said. “The authorities must prioritize repairs and modernization of the pier before further damage occurs or disaster strikes.”
The recent storm has brought the deteriorating state of Famagusta Port into sharp focus. Boat owners and tourists alike are calling on the relevant authorities to take immediate action to repair and modernize the port, ensuring its safety and functionality.
The question remains: how much longer can the remaining structure withstand the elements before further neglect leads to catastrophe?
