Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz expressed strong support for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) joining the Organization of Turkic States (TDT) as a full member. In a joint statement with President Ersin Tatar, Yılmaz noted that TRNC’s membership in the TDT would strengthen unity among Turkic nations. “The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will soon take its place in our family council, the Organization of Turkic States. We believe and wish for this,” said Yılmaz.
President Tatar’s recent participation as a guest of honor at the TDT Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, symbolized the growing alliance. Yılmaz stressed that these ongoing diplomatic efforts between Turkey and TRNC reflect the close coordination and shared vision between the two nations. The meeting covered projects to boost the prosperity of Turkish Cypriots despite the prolonged isolation and economic embargo imposed on TRNC.
Strategic Cooperation for Regional Stability
Yılmaz emphasized the importance of the Turkey-TRNC Economic and Financial Cooperation Agreement for 2024 as a solid foundation for TRNC’s economic development. “Our priority is to ensure that Turkish Cypriots progress towards a secure, prosperous future,” he said, noting joint projects for infrastructure, health, and social services development. The Vice President reaffirmed that Turkey is dedicated to supporting TRNC’s growth and security, highlighting that a fair, sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue is essential for regional stability.
Yılmaz criticized the ineffective UN-led negotiations, saying, “Seeking a solution within the exhausted UN parameters aimed at a federal resolution is futile.” Instead, he called for recognition of the Turkish Cypriot people’s sovereign equality, which would facilitate direct flights, trade, and diplomatic relations with the TRNC.
Tatar: TRNC Becoming a Center of Attraction in the Eastern Mediterranean
President Tatar echoed the sentiment, highlighting TRNC’s strategic role in the Eastern Mediterranean. He underscored Turkey’s unwavering support, as seen in President Erdoğan’s words at the TDT Summit, “The TRNC is the apple of Turkey’s eye.” Tatar pointed out that the TRNC is now recognized as a stable, independent state by Turkic and Islamic nations, adding that “there is no turning back.”
Addressing the ongoing energy challenges, Tatar mentioned plans for a two-way energy connection between Turkey and TRNC, a potential project to include Southern Cyprus. “Unfortunately, due to the reluctance of the Greek Cypriots to recognize TRNC, this project might face delays,” he remarked.
Tatar also referenced discussions with the UN Secretary General’s representative, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, on promoting “3D” initiatives: direct trade, flights, and contact with TRNC. He highlighted the importance of these measures for economic resilience while emphasizing UN statements that there is “currently no common ground for negotiations” between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot administrations.
In closing, Tatar emphasized the symbolic importance of Turkish President Erdoğan’s support at the TDT Summit, which he described as “a vital source of strength” for the TRNC’s just cause.
