President Ersin Tatar declared that the "federation issue in Cyprus is now closed," stating that the concept of a partnership republic with Greek Cypriots has lost all significance. Speaking to the press in Samsun, where he was conducting official visits, Tatar emphasized the Northern Cypriot government’s commitment to a two-state solution.
Reflecting on the 50th-anniversary celebrations of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Tatar highlighted the impactful statements made during the ceremonies, particularly President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's words that "the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is the apple of the eye of the Republic of Turkey." Tatar noted that with Turkey's support, the TRNC has closed the chapter on federation, and the pursuit of a new policy is underway.
Tatar pointed to the steadfast will of the Turkish Cypriot people to determine their own future as a distinct nation. He remarked on the TRNC's unique geostrategic position and its rights within the Eastern Mediterranean, emphasizing that the TRNC's territorial waters, airspace, and cooperation with Turkey contribute significantly to the "Blue Homeland" doctrine, further promoting its national interests.
Promoting the TRNC on the Global Stage
President Tatar reiterated the TRNC's efforts to establish its presence internationally, underscoring the continuous support from Turkey. He referenced President Erdoğan's call for lifting the isolation of the TRNC during a recent visit to Kyrgyzstan, where Erdoğan emphasized ending embargoes on Turkish Cypriots and establishing necessary diplomatic, economic, and political relations for the TRNC.
Despite ongoing international pressures, especially from the European Union, Tatar stressed the unbreakable ties between Turkey and Northern Cyprus. He criticized the European Union’s stance, influenced by Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration, as an attempt to sever TRNC's connections with Turkey in pursuit of a "united Cyprus."
President Tatar concluded by affirming the resilience and determination of the Turkish Cypriot people to establish their statehood and independence on the world stage, regardless of the obstacles faced.
